When Mr C.E. Challicom established what was then the ‘Clevedon Depository and House Furnishers’ in 1858, he would have found it hard to predict the changes that the business would undergo in order to become the successful furniture shop it is today.
The present premises opened in 1872 and offered a variety of different services including removals by road, rail and sea; warehousing furniture; hiring mail carts and invalid chairs; selling policies for the ‘London Assurance Fire & Life; personally conducting funerals and undertaking cremations! A large stock of new and second hand furniture, floor coverings, curtain materials and china were also held for sale (after 1880 – ‘Elton Ware’ pottery was also stocked and are now collectors items).
In 1938, following the passing on of Mrs C.E Challicom, a limited company was formed and the present family purchased the company and property in 1949. Over the years, the house furnishings side of the business was steadily built up and an additional showroom was added to the front of the building to increase floor space and window display area (the benefits of this are easily seen today.)
In the late 1970s, the Challicoms that you see today began to take shape, displaying one of the best selections of furniture and furnishings in the area over four floors of show rooms. A few years later, Challicoms joined an independent furniture buying group and the savings gained through the increased buying strength of the group enabled Challicoms to pass the benefits onto customers as very competitive prices (and this is still the case today). Since then Challicoms has gone from strength to strength and lately has been focusing on fully integrating technology into the shop as well as continually finding new and interesting furniture for our ever changing, eclectic showrooms.
As it stands now, Challicoms has come a long way over around 150 years and has an enviable reputation as a family firm providing quality products and service at very reasonable prices and looks forward to continuing this in the future in order to serve customers in the best possible fashion.
